Before we got married in 2003 we had been trying to find the home we wanted to build. We were blessed to have family land that was given to us in the area where we grew up. Shane’s aunt, Elizabeth Bell, decided to let us decide what part of property that we wanted. So we picked out the old tobacco field overlooking the Nolichucky River Valley to put our “forever home.
Breaking Ground 2003
As we began to build in the summer of 2003, we had hopes of moving in after we got married in December of the same year.. As we hired our builder we put our hope in his work and crew. Quickly learning that he was in over his head and we were soon down almost $40,000 and about 4 months behind. Between losing money and time, multiple subcontractors lying and stealing money, we decided to build it “ourselves”. With the help of our families, we decided to build it ourselves.
We were blessed to have a family friend, Sadie Campbell, let us stay in a family home until we finished the house. Little did we know we would not move in until the late spring of 2005. We could never thank or repay Sadie or our families with all of their love, support, blood, sweat, and tears it took to pull this off.
We love each and every one of you, more than you will ever know.
